Emergency Food Pantry

We distribute nutritious food to the financially disadvantaged and otherwise needy families, seniors, and individuals throughout New York City.  On average, we distribute 300 packages of food each month which feed about 650 individuals.  Our clients come to us for many reasons, from illness or crisis to unemployment or welfare benefit termination.  Whatever the cause of food shortage, we believe in moving our customers beyond the need for emergency food.

In this spirit, we emphasize talking to and connecting with our clients.  To better serve in a comprehensive and meaningful way, we conduct extensive outreach through partner organizations in the areas of free/affordable health care, food stamps eligibility, nutrition education, and legal entitlements.

The work of our food pantry is accomplished with the help of an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer sponsored by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger as well as community members who volunteer their time.

We continue to find ways to enhance our pantry efforts.  We recently helped to found a community network of emergency food programs—the Brooklyn Alliance of Community Services (BACS) sponsored by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger.  Through our affiliation with BACS, we connect with and share resources and ideas with numerous other food pantries in Central Brooklyn.  We facilitate innovative and collaborative projects in a concerted effort to end hunger in our communities.

Food Packages

The items in our food pantry vary depending on funding and donations.  During the Thanksgiving holiday, special packages that include a frozen turkey or chicken are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.  During the summer months, we offer a variety of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables as part of our efforts to promote healthy eating.

Who Can Use the Food Pantry?

Our pantry is open to all families and individuals in need of emergency food assistance throughout New York City.  We also accept referrals from the NYC Hunger Hotline, community organizations, churches, treatment centers, and medical offices.
